There are albums that simply crush you — and then there are albums that bury you under mountains of granite, leaving you gasping for air in the most satisfying way imaginable. Thronehammer's debut Usurper of the Oaken Throne is firmly, gloriously in the latter category. From the very first notes of the mammoth opener "Behind the Wall of Frost," it's clear you're in for something monumental: riffs the size of ancient oaks, a rhythm section that moves with the tectonic patience of continents drifting, and vocals that sound like they were bellowed from the depths of some forgotten, moss-covered cavern.

What makes this record so special isn't just the sheer weight of its doom — and make no mistake, with tracks routinely stretching past the ten-minute mark, this is epic doom metal in the truest sense — but the atmosphere that seeps through every crack. There's a sense of ancient forests, crumbling castles, and battles fought in the mist that permeates the entire work. "Warhorn," clocking in at a staggering nineteen minutes, is the album's towering centerpiece: a slow-burning odyssey that builds and builds until it feels like the very earth is shaking beneath you. The shorter (relatively speaking!) "Svarte Skyer" offers a brief, haunting respite before the title track returns to pummel you into blissful submission with its fifteen-minute reign of crushing majesty. This is doom metal that understands the power of patience, the beauty of a riff held just long enough to make your chest tighten.
